Original Composition Contest For Wind Ensemble
Application Deadline for receipt of materials is July 24, 2009
The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble is seeking original, unpublished works for wind ensemble specific to our instrumentation.
Winning entry(s) will be featured at the Fall Classic Wind Ensemble Concert in October 2009. Difficulty level should be suitable for medium to advanced players. Cash award and performance.
Following are the guidelines and procedures for entering the “Call for Scores”
Awards
First Prize cash award of $500 and second prize cash award of $250 plus performance by the Hillcrest Wind Ensemble (HWE) in the fall of 2009.
Eligibility
This composition competition is open to all US composers, regardless of age. Members of the HWE and their families/significant others are not eligible. All entries must meet the guidelines below to be considered.
Composition Guidelines/Rules
(1) Style/Subject Matter:
Music relating to the Fall season are appreciated but not mandatory. All styles of music will be considered: traditional, modern, avante garde, etc. Works including soloists (instrumental only) will be considered. All compositions must be original works for wind ensemble and have not been performed or published. Works with electronics/computer or vocals will not be considered.
(2) At least one copy of the professional quality score and instrumental parts.
(3) Instrumentation:
4 flutes (piccolo double)
2 oboe
1 Eb clarinet
7 Bb clarinet
1 alto clarinet
1 bass clarinet
1 bassoon
2 alto saxophones
1 tenor saxophone
1 baritone saxophone
4 horn
2 cornet
3 trumpet
3 trombone (including bass)
2 euphonium
1 tuba
Timpani
2 percussion
Optional: piano or harp
(4) Duration: 8 minutes maximum
(5) Difficulty: level suitable for Medium to Advanced players
(6) Personal Information:
Admissions do not need to be anonymous. Include on a separate sheet of paper: composer's name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, Title of submitted composition(s), list of instrumentation, duration of composition, date of completion
(7) Recordings: a recording of the submitted work(s) should be included (midi okay).
(8) Return of Materials: Scores will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope of the proper size is enclosed.
(9) Entry fee: A non-refundable entry fee of twenty-five U.S. dollars ($25.00) in the form of a check must be included with each submission. All checks must be made payable to Hillcrest Wind Ensemble, with HWE Composition noted in the memo. US funds only.
Deadline for submissions: July 24, 2009 (postmark)
The winning entries will be notified by August 22, 2009 and will be posted on the HWE website. Parts must be received no later than September 11, 2009 if not included with original submission.
