Effective immediately, following guidelines released by Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health on March 11 in response to the increasing challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19, Hillcrest Wind Ensemble (HWE) will suspend all rehearsals and public performances until at least April 20, 2020, which is the first rehearsal for the Cabaret concert (when this policy will be re-evaluated and future rehearsals determined based on the situation at that time). It is not possible for us to enforce the restriction of social distancing at 6 to 10 feet between each person at either rehearsals or concerts. This means that our two Spring Festival concerts scheduled during this time, including the performances at First United Methodist Church of Chula Vista on Sunday, March 29 and at Bankers Hill Club on Saturday, April 18 are hereby canceled. While the April concert falls outside of the current time frame indicated by the government guidelines, since we are canceling rehearsals, we would not be prepared to perform this concert. Our highest priority is to protect the health and well-being of our members. We will continue to monitor the situation closely for future performances as this anxious situation unfolds.
HWE's commitment to the health and safety of our audience and musicians is paramount, and though these steps are difficult and painful, it is necessary to take them. HWE has approached the unfolding coronavirus situation with seriousness and care, and we have not made these decisions lightly. We wish to take every possible measure to ensure the continuing health and well-being of our audience and musicians.
We will continue to post regular updates on our website, social media channels, and to communicate via Email.
Thank you for your understanding,
Board of Directors
Hillcrest Wind Ensemble
Join the Ensemble!
We currently have openings for the following instrumentalists:
All wind and percussion musicians of the San Diego community are welcome to join the group as a musical and social outlet. Our membership is diverse and we welcome all musicians whether gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. All members must be at least 18 years of age.
Being a wind ensemble, we keep our numbers to one player per part, with doubles on clarinets and flutes. There are no auditions; however, the director reserves the right to limit who may perform at specific concerts depending on instrumentation or musical abilities. We play music at a medium-advanced level.
Membership requires regular attendance at Monday night rehearsals. Members are expected to provide their own instruments and bring their own music stand.
If you would like to be considered for a substitute position or be put on a waiting list, please contact us.
We request a monthly donation of $10 per musician to cover expenses, such as renting our rehearsal hall and storage facility and buying music. This donation is strictly voluntary and will in no way affect an individual's opportunity to rehearse or perform with the ensemble.
We rehearse on Monday nights, 7 to 9:30 PM at the Metropolitan Community Church in Bay Park, 2633 Denver Street, San Diego, CA 92110.
